About us

Our History

Around the turn of the century, a number of families left the state of Oregon and migrated to Canada with the intention of becoming farmers.  These families settled in the East Bittern Lake area in the spring of 1901.  On August22, 1901, this group of people met in the homes of Christian Weisser for the purpose of organizing themselves as a church.  With 16 members the Bittern Lake Baptist Church came into existence.

For five years, services were held in the East Bittern Lake School House, while most of the prayer and business sessions were conducted in the home of Christian Weisser.  In the fall of 1906, plans were completed to erect a permanent house of worship.  The following year, on August 11, the new church building was dedicated.  The basement and the addition plus some further renovations were made in the summer of 1934.

On January 11, 1915, the members met at a business gathering and changed the name from Bittern Lake Baptist Church to Camrose Baptist Church.  In 1940, the name Bethany Baptist Church was adopted.  It was during the ministry of Rev. Fred Schimke (1953-1956) that it was decided that the Bethany Baptist Church should come into the city of Camrose and worship together with the other believers already meeting there.  The church was sold and another church was bought in the city and a new name was adopted, The Fellowship Baptist Church.  Shortly after our 75th Anniversary, we were led to accept the gift of three lots in the Century Meadows area.   By the Fall of 1978 a new building (our current one) was erected and the named changed to Century Meadows Baptist Church.

In August, 1985, our church membership approved the purchase of additional frontage to the south of our existing property on 66th Street.  Thereafter, an additional multi-purpose wing was constructed to provide for offices, additional Christian Education space, and a gymnasium.
